The arts and crafts of Armenia

Armenia boasts a wide range of traditional souvenirs, all of which represent its ancient culture and craft traditions. Among the most famous of its souvenirs are carpet weaving, pottery and ceramics, needlework, and jewelry making. All these souvenirs represent our beautiful country and serve to remind travelers of their time spent in Armenia.

CeramaZart has developed the art of making souvenirs, taking it to another level of authenticity. The word Ceramazart, as the word suggests, means “ceramic jewelry” and specializes in pottery making. However, it also blends other traditional crafts into its ceramics, such as carpet weaving, ornament painting, and manuscript illumination.

Armenian pottery

Armenia is renowned for its pottery making, a craft that stretches back thousands of years. Armenian people have long used clay and earthenware to make pots, bowls, and other decorative pieces. Clay pitchers were also used for storing alcoholic beverages, such as wine. All these ceramic items are decorated with geometric patterns, plants and animal motifs. CeramaZart draws inspiration from all these motifs, depicting them on its pottery. One of our brand’s hallmarks is the “Pomegranate” collection. It takes inspiration from one of Armenia’s national fruits.

With the advent of Christianity, Armenians began to use Christian motifs and symbols on pottery. Among these symbols are the cross, Biblical narratives and Christian imageries. One of many Christian symbols is the angel. Images of these heavenly creatures convey indescribable warm feelings and a sense of protection. Angel figures come with an angel-bell and minuscule Armenian ornaments.

Among our most iconic pieces of pottery is the “Bird Letter” collection, inspired by the Armenian medieval bird ornaments. Bird letters, or “Trchnatars”, are depicted as birds shaped like the Armenian letters. Items that include the bird motifs are highly customizable thanks to the rich phonological system of the Armenian language and its alphabet.

Carpet weaving

Another renowned form of Armenian souvenir making are the carpets. Armenian carpets are vivid, beautiful and unique. Armenian artisans use intricate patterns to bring them to life. Carpets are important in the Armenian culture because they symbolize wealth and wellbeing. They are intricate in style and usually depict animals, plants, crosses, little suns, and geometric shapes.

Armenians revere the sun just as much as Armenia is renowned for its sunny climate. Armenians have always looked to the Sun for inspiration. CeramaZart, too, has drawn inspiration from the Sun many times. Our collection of Sun Carpet bowls are adorned with traditional Armenian sun patterns.

Among other distinctive features of Armenian carpet making traditions are the Crown carpets, also known as Tag gorg in Armenian. These carpets originate from Artsakh. They carry depictions of crowns, suns, birds, and plants. Crown carpets are called so because they have motifs resembling the crown of old and medieval Armenian kings. Like the other carpet-themed collections of CeramaZart, this one also draws inspiration from the ancient tradition of Armenian carpet weaving. One of our brand’s most iconic accessories is the serving stand. Due to its perfect design, it can be used for serving dishes or teapot. Some of our finest examples include a decorative vase, a serving stand, and a round serving platter.
